Much like the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, the mural of Toulouse-Lautrec’s poster of the singer Aristide Bruant stares down upon Adams Morgan, surveying (and perhaps judging) the denizens and revelers down on 18th Street. While the Cafe Lautrec is no longer, the art remains (for now) and is as much a part of the Adams Morgan landscape as international street food and cold draft beer. Old DC heads will remember the Cafe Lautrec as a jazz-piano cafe-bar with pretty decent food, but it now serves as a vibrant memory of a rapidly-vanishing Washington DC nightlife culture.
