If a bar could be a spirit animal, then Chief's Cafe in Oakland would be mine! I first stepped through the door there in 1988 and immediately felt like I was home. The jukebox had Motown soul and Husker Du... and everything on the spectrum in between. It was truly a melting pot of cultures and the vibe was one of 100% inclusion... a rare thing to find then and now. A couple of Iron City longnecks into my first visit and I knew I had found a new touchstone in my life.

I have been visiting Chief's a few times a year ever since my college days, just to keep tabs. The faces have changed, but the vibe is always inviting. They don't make neighborhood bars like Chief's anymore, so we gotta cherish them while we have 'em!
