It can be argued (and I would certainly stand by this viewpoint) that Inner Ear Recording Studio was largely responsible for shaping the fabled Washington DC music scene as we all think of it. Starting with the Teen Idles release in 1980, Don Zientara and his Inner Ear Studio have produced classic records for Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Fugazi, Mary Timony, Foo Fighters, the Urban Verbs... the list goes on and on. There simply isn't enough space on this page to detail the musical and cultural output this modest and unassuming studio has accounted for in its years.

And now... it's gone. Much like many of our favorite clubs of yore, Inner Ear's Shirlington location has fallen victim to redevelopment. Fall 2021 saw the last of the sessions in this hallowed hall. Dave Grohl and Scream were the last folks to record at Inner Ear... a very fitting send-off.

I was one of the many lucky ones who got to record there. My old band, Ape House, was making an album at the same time Ian MacKaye was in the house producing a Q and Not U release. My later band, The Buzz, was interviewed for Don and Alex Vidales' "StageCraft" radio show in the fall of 2018 (pics of me and my family from this day are here for all to see). The place was imbued in goodness, and for this reason I am commemorating it with a couple of prints that sum up the way I want to remember it.

As I wasn't able to make it back into the studio before it closed, longtime DC scenester Holly Eney was good enough to let me go through her photo archives to inspire these designs properly... thanks, Holly!
