Damn... of all the club closures in DC, this is the one that hits me the hardest. The Velvet Lounge was the always-welcoming training ground for my band Ape House back in the early 2000s. We played there approximately one gazillion times and have some great soundboard recordings as momentos. Every flavor of musical act could be found on the stage on any given night and the crowd and staff were always fun, fun, fun!
The Velvet Lounge anchored a previously sleepy (and seedy) stretch of U Street. Other than the neighboring 930 Club, there was precious little in that 'hood. Nowadays this area is full of Warby Parker shops and the like, but back in the day it was a test of your mettle to catch a show or just sip a draft there. And for that, you were rewarded with an authentic DC rock dive experience.
Most of my artwork has a degree of nostalgia and emotional resonance for at least a small section of society, and for me this one is the top of the heap. If you feel the same way about a seriously disappearing DC, maybe you should put this print on your wall and think about headier times?
All available options are standard frame sizes found at your local craft store, frame shop or IKEA! (frame NOT included)
