In the mean streets of downtown Baltimore, there stands a gorgeous piece of architecture known as the Congress. A turn-of-the-century luxury hotel, it had it all back in its prime: indoor pools, restaurants, luxury suites, celebrities galore, and yes, a 70-foot long bar carved out of pure marble.

It was this basement bar that gave name to arguably Baltimore's first punk club, the Marble Bar in the late 70s. By then the neighborhood (and the hotel) had pretty much gone to seed, which makes for the most fertile of grounds for art and experimental music to converge... and converge it did. Not only a haven for local art acts such as Da Moronics and Thee Katatonix, but also an early launching platform for REM, Talking Heads, Bad Brains, Psychedelic Furs, and a slew of other future heavyweights. I was fortunate enough to catch Black Flag there, being a young little skate punk at the time... it was a formative gig for me.

By the time I moved to Baltimore in 1990, the Congress was at a very low ebb and the Marble Bar was shuttered. Trees were growing out of the ornate facade and the neighborhood somehow got even more dodgy. Since that time, it's been reborn as an apartment building, and a pretty nice looking one at that! This print is based on photos I took recently, combined with some artistic license with banners leading intrepid concert-goers downstairs to the hallowed Marble Bar. Maybe someday it can return? We can only wish....
